Hi everyone~
Here's the speech Janis made during pop (18sept if I'm not wrong!)
& Sorry for putting this off for some time heh heh heh :b
So, here it goes ~

Yo! Mdm Aisyah said that this speech is supposed to be a speech to encourage the new committee, not a farewell speech. The farewell speech will be left for the end-of-year pop. Thus, I won't be thanking anyone today.

First I would like to congratulate all those who got promoted today. All of you have work hard and you all really deserve the apponitments. So, let's give them a round of applause. *clap clap*

For those who are not promoted this time round, continue to work hard and show commitments for the band. As compared to previous years, this year's promotion saw many sec1 and 2 Bandits getting promoted. But for the lower sec bandits who are not promoted yet, don't worry because you guys still have a long way to go. Getting used to the responsibilities might be a little tough, and I urge the seniors to help your juniors along the way. They can be blur sotongs, so guide them and help them do their jobs well, because as seniors, that is what you should do.

To the newly appointed section leaders and principal players:

Your section is in your hands now. How disciplined they are, how well they perform in band, depends on your capability to handle them. Your leaders need your help and it would definately make their jobs easier if the sections are well-disciplined and it would also make Mr Goh's job easier if you guys lead the sectionals well and help them with their playing. Always remember, a band is made up of different sections and when any one section falls, the band falls as well. Do not take your responsibilities lightly. Your section will look up to you; teach them, guide them, and bond the section well together.

To the new committee:

From now on, you guys will be helping to run different areas of the band; the library, the instruments, the uniform and the new batch of cadets next year. Have the initiative to carry out your jobs without being told to do so, because no one else in the band is doing that job, even the leaders, expect for you. For example, if you are going to have a performance soon, get the scores, oils, reeds, banners, coats etc ready in advance and without getting prompted. You guys play a very big part in this band so do not forget your responsibilities. Many of you are new to the jobs and have alot to learn, It may take you sometime before you can get a hang of it. The job may also get quite tiring at times, but don't give up! Always remember: If you are not going to do it, who will? After your exams, you guys will get very busy as the new committee will have to pack that pig-sty band room which we have, with scores and reeds everywhere etc. That's your first assignment, have fun with that! Also work well with your leaders and help them run the band.

Finally, to the new leaders; Jinghui, Mabel, Yunna & Zelai:

I trust that the 4 of you will be able to lead the band well and make it greater than before. I may not be the best example of what a good leader should be like, the only way I can help the 4 of you is to share with you my experience and perhaps give some good advice if I have them. In time to come, you will find out that being a leader is more than what it seems. We do more than falling the band in. We have to do adminstrative work, go around disciplining some people, worry about the smallest issue, stress about band and it all boils down to the fact that we have to serve the band.

The band is made up of 40-50 different people with different mindsets. It is never easy to please every single band member, so don't try to do so. One of my seniors told me this: If you think what you are doing is going to help the band, go ahead with it even though some band members do not like it. The reason you are chosen as a leader and not the others, is because we trust that you can lead the band with the decisions you make. The Band Major of year 2007-2008, Narita, told me this:"When things don't go your way, you just have to go the other way." HOM: Think flexibly. If something goes wrong, use the Habits of Mind. Taking responsible risks. It's all very useful I tell you.

Finally, to the band:

Help the leaders and the new committee to help you to help everyone. Jiayou (ok ps this is supposed to be in chinese characters and my computer can't type chi words, shocking i know.) everybody!I'll miss you guys! See you at the POP after the O levels!

since Janis did her little farewell speech here, i'll follow her then! ( i'm copying her okay )

we're graduating and its still sad, even though its not very evident.

but i really had fun and enjoyed working with the band.

thank you ( EVERYONE ) for making this experience memorable and exciting!

i will attend concerts and come back to visit! haha

After what happened on Friday, I've did some thinking. Half of this post is going to be some admin thing, half of it is going to be my heartfelt words.

Perhaps the newer band members do not know our committee, so here it is:

No scores- Look for Librarians:
Mabel (Sec 3, Sax) & Gloria (Sec 3, Trombone)

No reed/oil/anything to do with instruments- Look for Instrument Quarter Master (IQM):
Terng Fei (Sec 3, Perc)

Uniform problems- Look for Uniform Quarter Master (UQM)
Cyndi (Sec 2, Sax), Yun Na (Sec 3, Cornet)

At this point of time, I don't think mentioning any names would be an awkward situation for the band, since the band is not really in an ideal state now.
It's obvious that the discipline has dropped, so now, who's fault is it?
The answer is: Every body's. Including me.

Look at it this way. If people would stop complaining and whining about doing things such as: Drills, Sectionals etc, won't we make life easier for everyone?

Many of you have heard me saying what I'm going to say below. But still, I think that you should read because from the attitude that's been displayed by the main band, I think all of you need some reflecting.

Sectionals. The principal players (who has to bear the responsibility of the section's musical aspect), or the sec 3s who are now replacing the sec 4s, are there to help the section know their parts.

Why do we have sectionals? To make sure that you know your own parts before playing with the band. So problems like Key Signatures, Notes and Rhythm should be okay when the section plays with the band.

During combined band practice, it is not time for you to practice your part. The band probably has 20 over parts or more. If practice is spent on ensuring one person's part is played correctly, then what about the rest of the band? Won't it be wasting everybody else's time? So be more considerate.

If you really need prove, then look at the Flutes&Clarinets and the Percussion section. They have section tutors who help them with their sectionals. How often do we see them practicing their parts during combined practice as compared to the rest of the sections? Just because the rest of the sections don't have section tutors, does it mean that you can't do and take sectionals seriously? If you think that sectionals can't be taken seriously, for the sec 2s and 3s, I feel sorry for your Sec 4s because they have wasted their time passing down what they know to you.

And don't say that you've practiced everything so you can not have sectionals anymore. Are you so confident of yourself? What about the others? Stop being so arrogant.

Sometimes, when you are being told that your section's sectional is very slack, don't go around saying that it's okay because Mr Goh didn't say anything about it. When someone corrects you, don't be so ignorant. And, Mr Goh did say something about the band's sectionals, just not in your faces.

I am quite pleased to see improvement in certain sections like the Trombones and Cornets. Good job and keep it up people. However, sections like the Tuba and Euphonium needs to catch up. A lot. Seriously. The Percussion section also has to be more serious at times.

I hope to see every single one of the band members to take sectionals seriously from now on.

Moving of Instruments. On Friday, all of you did move down everything within 10 minutes. So why do you take more than 10 minutes shifting your instruments from the band rm to the music centre which is on the same level? Do you really need someone to shout at you? Think about it. Have more sense of urgency. Everyone takes their own sweet time moving things around. Even if you've finished setting up your instrument, why not help your section mates set up the instruments? And the moving of percussion instruments.

I've observed on Friday that once you carried your instrument to the hall, you don't care about what's left behind. Some of you just carry one percussion instrument and forget about the rest. This means that the other band members would have to make more rounds to cover up your slack. All these shows the lack of teamwork in the band.

There's one person I would like to praise, and he is Ebel. Since last year, he's the only one person I see always leaving his instruments/files and taking them after all the percussion instruments are carried. Everyone should take Ebel as a role model for this.

Drills. Every time someone complains about drills, it's really frustrating. And always, there would be some excuses made just to get out of drills. Pure disappointment. Till now, if you don't know why the band is doing drills, I don't know what to say.

Stop it with the: Band is not a Uniform Group, We are Concert Band, not Military Band crap. For your information, every other secondary school band in Singapore does drills. I've been to the NCO course for the band/drum majors of 120+ secondary school bands and all of us has to do drills. And guess what, everyone there can do drills. Not because we are b/dms. But cause the band actually taught us how to do drills.

Your attitude towards drills is horrible. It just shows us how much discipline you have in yourself.

Since last year, there's an improvement of attitude towards drills in certain people and that is Zelai and Cheryl. These two showed a great sense of responsibility towards their own attendance and there's been an vast improvement in their attitude and I feel that they should be recognised for that. I'm really proud of Cheryl and Ze Lai :)

Attire. Why do we stress so much on good attire? Band is one of the respected CCAs in the school, and when we are presenting ourselves to the school, we should look smart. Not like a sloppy bunch of teenagers. Tucking in your shirt, is it asking too much of you? The rest of the rules are simply school rules. And the attire of the band is really bad these few weeks. During the SYF period, and after it for a while, hardly anyone got punished. Now, you can see it for yourself.

Heck care attitude. I realised that many of you switch off when someone is talking to you. It's obvious. Since I don't know when, the above things have been constantly repeated, but did anything happen? No. And, simple instructions like: Bring the Percussion Instruments to the backstage, none of you understood. The percussion instruments ended up in the middle of the hall. When Mr Goh told you people to bring the Percussion instruments backstage, you started bringing your own instruments to the backstage. Enough said.

Also, it's quite amusing that many main band members have forgotten what we did for SYF. How the song is being played and what you should do/not do. The things written on your scores, are you reading it?

Here's the cold hard truth. Mr Goh and almost all the seniors feel that the band don't bother.
Till the extent that some even go up to the leaders and say that it's useless disciplining/talking to you because nothing gets into your heads. So what if the band will hate us for the shouting and punishing? We have to get the band in shape. Another thing that many of you might not be happy about; even though some seniors came back to play/didn't come back to play, we don't feel like playing because of the heck care attitude.

"You must learn to follow before you can lead" That's what one of my seniors told me.
If you have been doubting what I wrote because you think that what I say makes no sense, then let me tell you, you better think hard about the above quotation and what it means.

The things Mr Goh and what the seniors say may not make sense now, but they do. You may not see it now, but let yourself do, slowly. We all make mistakes and fumble, no one can fault that. Though we get told off, we shall learn from in and not make the same mistakes again. That's when we really learn and grow up. Instead of doubting what one says or does, why not think why that particular thing is said or done? Being skeptical is okay, but sometimes, stop and think; why is it done? How will it affect the near future?

Your seniors had put so much effort in helping the band, and they don't even ask for anything in return? Did any of your seniors asked you to say 'Thank You' or 'Sorry'? Even though they deserve it, they never asked for it. They never asked for anything in return. Do you see what your seniors have been going through? Many of your seniors have been hurt by their juniors, be it being disappointed, telling lies or being scolded by vulgarities. Have you even thought of showing your gratitude to your seniors instead of thinking about how your senior should be acting?

Yes, we can all have fun and joke around. But we've only got 2 weeks left till the Opening Ceremony. We're playing for a long parade which will tire everyone and we'll also be playing two songs which the main band had trained hard for, for the SYF. It's time to get serious. This performance is going to be the sec 4/5's last performance. Make it a good one, for them, for you and for the band. A good performance which will mark the finale of the graduating member's role in the band. We're not asking for lavish gifts or big thank you cards. We just want the band to start showing more responsibility towards the band.

Reflect and ask yourselves, what happened?

I'm hoping that some of you can tell me how you really feel and what you are thinking about this band that everyone, including you, Mr Goh and the teachers, cares so much about, after reading this. Be it how you can improve the band or anything; I've opened up alot in this post, I hope you would open up to me as well.

- Precaution. Might sound funny but just bring it.

3. Band BBQ (organised by sec3s :D)
- Message is passed around by sec 3s, but I'll put a note here anyway.
- Meet at the school's BACK GATE at 6 pm, 26th June.

4. Temporary UQMs
- 'cos there's no UQM in the band currently, the temp UQMs will be Yunna & Cyndi. :) They will be the UQMs till we get the official ones after POP. They will take charge of band's uniform for performances, and anything else concerning the band's uniform. So anything about uniform, go look for them.

5. Practices for graduating seniors (sec 4 & 5)
- Practice will commence on the 2nd week of July.
- For preparation of "BBSS Opening Ceremony"
- Details will be given at later date.

6. Absentees for holiday pract
- If you've been overseas etc. or missed band pract cause you are sick, LETTER OF EXCUSE must be produced. If not, you will get a big fat 0 for your attendance for the pract and might affect your overall attendance.
- This notice is for the Sec 1s especially, 'cos I'm sure the rest of the band is familiar with this rule.

7. Absentees for holiday pract consistently
- You know who you are. Better come or you will have difficulty catching up. BIG TIME.

8. Relay system
- The old system is such that SLs (mostly sec 4s) pass the msg down the the rest of the section. But since the sec 4s "step down" already, the relay system now will be that each section appoint ONE PERSON (preferably sec3, if don't have then sec 2) to pass down the msg.

Okay, the blog skin in quite gay.
But anyway, just put any of your tags under the comments for now okay?

The SYF photo is out, (YES!!!:D), but I don't have the sample with me.
The orders will be collected by 22/6 (i hope) and here are the sizes:

Super 6R- $12
Super 8R- $15
Super 12R- $60
Super 16R- $180
CD- $70

I have no idea what's with the "Super" or the CD.
Will try to ask techers/mr goh by 22nd. Then you all can decide what you want.
I think we have a few "size samples" in the band room. There's one on the wall (SYF 2007) and one somewhere in the cupboard (SYF 200?- the one that the frame got smashed).
Payment will be made when SCHOOL REOPENS.

I don't think much people read this blog because it's been dead for quite a while.
So, just pass the message around that SYF PHOTO IS COMING SOON!
No need to kan chong over what to order, cause it's quite a long period of time before we take the orders down.

the balloting results are out.

the BBSS Concert Band is Band Number 8, and will be playing on the 30th of March.

We are after Woodlands Ring Secondary School.

Our performance timeslot is 11am, the announcement of the results will only commence at the end of the day (exclusive to Day One only)

do well and maintain the school's SAA.

Remember, SYF is a one-shot kind of thing.

it leaves NO ROOM for regrets and you have to make sure your best take is displayed up there, on that very stage.

Learning as a band, less like an individual

Hello band. Kel lee here. True to our word, we will post all 'reflection' letters here. This is Ebel's letter, and it is really what I call a reflection.

On Friday, 30/01/09, I skipped band practice as I thought that since Mr Goh would not be coming and there would be sectionals instead of combined band practice, it would be a waste of time as my part is mainly the bass one and I'm the only person in my section and had no juniors to teach, I decided to take a break and skip band practice. When I came back the following Monday, I realised that I had parts that needed to be either perfected or projected out. I felt guilty that I had skipped band practice during a crucial period where SYF is around the corner and when the band is not at its strongest. I realised that it is not about me but the band as a whole and what I did on Friday by skipping band practice was childish, immature and unbecoming, especially since I had prior experience in a concert band before. I apologise and promise that I will not repeat this again. I do not blame anyone as it is my choice to skip band practice and will accept full responsibility for my actions.

Doesn't this sound more like a reflection compared to the other?

ANYWAY, bad things aside, HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR NEW SEC 1S? Be sure to treat them like diamonds ok? They are our future successors! PP's IMPART ALL YOUR SKILLS TO THEM.

Question the intention, not the situation

Okay. Janis here to clear up some misunderstandings.

This issue is on the previous post.

1st: It is a reflection, NOT A LETTER for leaders to read.

2nd: We post up almost all the reflections given to us. (Please refer to Zelai's reflection on why he broke the uniform rule like a few months ago)

3rd: Even if it was an ideal reflection or one that Joel wrote, WE WOULD STILL POST IT UP. Reason being, we want the band members to learn from their other band mate's wrong doings and not repeat them. In Joel's reflection, I feel that he brought up a topic; importance of sectionals, which most or almost all the band members fail to understand.

Please question our intentions. The limelight of the previous post is not Joel's reflection, but what Kel Lee posted at the end.

I am sure that many of the band members feel the way Joel feel; come on we are not deaf/blind.

I think that the importance of sectionals is felt by the seniors only; probably because we went through SYF 2007 and know the process and everything. Everyone feels that sectionals is dry, and sucks the life out of everyone. That, everyone knows. But it is the importance of it that not everyone would know.

Ask yourself this question;
If each band member have gotten their part/pitch/tuning/notes etc right during sectionals, would we waste time during practice with Mr Goh when he tries to balance out everything?

When Mr Goh comes to practice with us, it is not the time for us to fumble over our notes/pitch/tuning. It is the time for us to put all the parts together. But usually during practice, how much time is spent for sections to get the right pitch? Or to get the right rhythm?

AND, if you think that we are not respecting Joel for posting this thing up, or that we are overboard, please question our intention and not the situation. Think deeper into the whole situation, don't look on the surface.

While we are at the issue of respect, please think from the leaders' point of view. To whom is being disrespected?

To belinda, we know why people skip band. I myself have skipped band quite a few times when I was in sec 1. But my attendance became regular after a few things happened. Not much people skip band now and attendance is quite good. I agree that Joel is not one that skips band often. And, skipping band with no reason and missing band with an excuse is two different things. A lot of people give us letter of excuse/mcs when they miss band. Some of you may not know this but the current situation now is, Yes, a lot of people never come BUT they got excuse, not cause they pon. If I am not wrong, no one has missed band on purpose since the last holiday practice.

But why is he given such heavy punishment like he says? I don't think this punishment is quite "heavy" because usually when people skips band intentionally, we will bring it up to the teachers, which we did not. Instead, we made write one page long of reflection.

I am not going to address this issue any further unless necessary because I am really at loss of words.

Todays post is not good news. I'll post first, explain later.
This 'letter' is from Joel. He skipped band to go out with a few other people, and we told him to write a one page reflection. This is what he wrote.(This is 100% authentic other than spelling mistakes changed)

Why I skip Band is because I find it a waste of time on that day. I could always practice at home since I bring home my instrument every practice. Moreover it was a Friday and I had Saturday and Sunday to practice. Sectionals were more of like a practice session to me. What other description can you find the meaning of sectionals? Sectionals is practice and I can do my own 'sectionals' at home. Friday was a day meant to relax. I feel that if I go for sectionals, it would be a waste of time. Even so, I seldom skip practices. This is my second or first time skipping band practice and yet I suffered such scolding. Terng Fei lied to the top 4. His relatives came back from Malaysia the day before Friday which is a Thursday. We finished doing our stuff at 3pm or around there and suspect practice to finish at 5 or so. Even if we did come, what would one hour practice make a difference? It wasn't me who plan this idea and yet I get too much scolding from the top 4. Truthfully speaking it was Enrique's idea and I didnt not see him getting any scolding. I see this as unfairness and not partial. I also don't believe that everyone in band did not skip before. I have made effort in contributing to the band by practicing and I believe I am not as good as others because I learn slower than others and somehow I feel I am being penalised by this. I find it difficult to live with this pressure in band since last year. I actually wanted to leave band because of the pressure and I decided to ignore comments made by my senior from time and time again. The only reason that made me stay was Terng Fei because I felt I have gained a promising friend in band. When Terng Fei and I skip band on that day, we had no regrets. We take whatever punishment awaits us. We hold full responsibility to it.

This was what his 'reflection' letter said. And just to make things clear, this is not directed at Joel. If this is how the band is feeling, me, Timotheus, Janis and Sin Pei will have to do something about this. Firstly, I'm sure you all have different feelings towards this letter. Can you imagine how we feel, seeing our own members say that band is 'a waste of time' ?

Lets analyze his letter. His first point, band is a waste of time. We don't need you to be a musical genius to join. And we do not penalize people for not being able to play. All we need is your commitment when you join. If you think its a waste of time, I really have nothing to say.

Secondly, Joel says that 'Sectionals were more of like a practice session to me. What other description can you find the meaning of sectionals? Sectionals is practice and I can do my own 'sectionals' at home. Friday was a day meant to relax. I feel that if I go for sectionals, it would be a waste of time.'. We have sectionals for a reason. It is not for you to practice on your own. Its for you to work out your parts as a section. If you don't come because you think its a waste of time, and you can do it at home, think again. Your section wont be in your pocket to have sectionals whenever you like. You need to work together as a section. Like what we always say, ONE BAND ONE SOUND. Its not about playing individually.

Next, Joel said 'Even so, I seldom skip practices. This is my second or first time skipping band practice and yet I suffered such scolding.'. This is not true. Anyone who skips band is going to get scolding as well. You mean that if you skip once or twice, we are supposed to pretend like nothing happened? We chase after everyone to come for practices, and to give MC's or excuse slips. Not talking about the top 4 alone, there are still others in band with 100% attendance. If they can do it, I don't see why you are complaining.

Fourth, the part about 'It wasn't me who plan this idea and yet I get too much scolding from the top 4.'. This shows you don't understand why you got scolded, and you are still resentful. Let me explain to you. Even though it wasn't you who planned this idea, you still didn't come for band. So if someone tells you to not come for band for the whole year, are you going to do that and blame that person for giving you that idea? The fact is that you didn't come, no matter who instigated you. If it really is Enrique's idea, we will do something about it. You did not see him getting scolded because we did not know that he planned it until now.

Next, you said that your senior makes comments about you. If you are unhappy about it, you can tell us, and we WILL DEFINITELY do something about it. If you keep it all to yourself, how would we know what you are thinking?

Please do not think we are shooting Joel down. Seeing this will make us wonder whether its just an opinion by Joel, or if the whole band thinks this way. We asked him for a 'one-page reflection letter', and what we got is just one page of complaints, blaming everybody. It is still a fact that you didn't come. We are really not targetting anyone, and as Joel said, 'We had no regrets,' and 'We hold full responsibilty to it.'. If you even wrote it, you would not be ashamed if we posted it, and as you said, hold full responsibilty.

If any of the other band members feel this way, feel free to give CONSTRUCTIVE comments on the tagboard, its there for a reason. If you are shy, you can email us or put it under an anonymous name. Better yet, tell it to us personally. We dont entertain any criticism under 'anonymous', and retarded comments from people not from the band are not welcomed. If you are ex-member or teacher etc etc, your feedback is greatly appreciated.

this is the new piece that Mr Goh bought, we might try it. Its a grade two piece, so if we can't play it properly, something is really wrong. this is the description of the piece: Written to depict the small town life and scenic beauty of a New England village, Monmouth Overture features a single reoccurring theme that winds its way throughout this composition in a modified theme and variation form. A musical rewarding work for younger players, it once again demonstrates Michael Sweeney's command of the young band idiom. Recorder parts are optional.

The last practice was very good (:
I was more impressed by the way you guys did your drills.
Sectionals well, take it more seriously the next time okay?
You guys know how you all fair during sectionals today so I shall not nag.
PPs, it is up to you guys to make the sectionals enjoyable.
It's kinda boring playing the 2 songs over and over again but work on the details of the songs; dynamics, notes, pitch etc.

Drills. SEE! You guys can do it one!
Really excellent job :D
It's tough and tiring, but hang in there okay?
And one proven theory- When you guys do drills properly and take it in the right spirit, we won't scream and shout.

I guess Kel Lee's and Timotheus's post really made an impact and you guys really reflected.
I am proud of you guys!
I am going to be honest, I was very demoralised before because of the rate the band was moving at and how you all did not have a sense of urgency.
I admit, a part of me wanted to give up and forget about it, but I am glad I did not.
Because you guys reacted to what Kel Lee & Tim said, and proved to me that you all really care. :)

There's some people I would like to praise because you guys deserve the vast improvement award.

Attire has been great for the past few weeks/months as compared to before. And she produces a mc/parents' letter to verify that she has to be excused from band for non-lame reasons. Improvement in drills too! (:

Became more responsible! (:

Gloria;
Improvement in attire and drills as compared to before. Makes an effort to be punctual for band. And she shows enthusiasm nowadays! (:

Jungan, Zelai;
Less discipline problems as compared to before! (:

Attending practices VERY often! (:

And many many more. These are just the few I can think of now.
Keep it up guys :)

BUT, there is still room for improvement.
For the next uniform check and the ones after it, I hope that the UQMs won't have to pump anyone for bad attire.

In other words, I want EVERYONE to have the best attire.
Having good attire is very basic. Tuck in shirt, pull up socks, have black hair accessories (for girls).

For the next practice, I want EVERYONE to be punctual.
I actually hope that everyone would be early not punctual.
But being punctual for fall in (which is ALWAYS 15 mins before the actual practice- example 12.45pm) is good enough :)
I agree with what Kel Lee said in the previous post; Our band is small, everyone is important. Making the small band smaller is not going to help.
When you guys are late, you will miss the warm ups and tuning.
Tuning, understood, very important. But doing warm ups is just as important.
If you have been in the band long enough, you would know its importance. Don't be ignorant.
I won't elaborate on that.

Attendance. I don't care if you all overslept or whatever. Just come for the practice.
The phrase better late than never explains it all.

Lastly, your playing.
Practice makes perfect. Even though the process is long and tiring, keep on going.
There is no substitute for hard work.
We need everyone to cooperate and we need everyone to give it their all, not just one player per section.
The band is too small for anyone to hide.
Don't regret that you guys didn't practice when the time comes.
Like Tim said, for the Sec 2s, next year will be your first and last time participating in SYF.
And for the sec 3s, next year will be your last year, and you want to make the best out of it.

negative - not much actually, his hairdo getting funnier each time. he holds his comb in his pocket. heh heh. hmm, tuning can be better (need a little bit more time)

For Yingtong,
Positive - She is pleasant, doesnt carry any attitude. Attendance is so so much better than last time. Willing to learn, innocent and tries to crack jokes (but sometime overboard). SHE IS DETERMINED, VERY VERY!!! cus she has been trying the Bb major for months, and finnaly gets all notes today, very very impressive!! and she doesnt complain at all.
Negative - her primary school mindset is still there, need to change, if too much, will be abit irritating. sometimes abit irrelevant, cannot always try to be funny, must be serious when needed to. lastly, she cannot always say "very difficult, i cannot do it, i dont know how, i forgot, i cannot play, how to play, is it like that?" cus if she constantly doubt herself, there is no way she is going to make it. she must believe in herself. if she always think she cannot do it, she will never be able to.

Cyndi has no problem projecting herself and tonguing has improved. :D She tends to go out of tune on the higher register and needs to move her fingers faster. Needs more breadth support too. All these will take time and practice. :)
Mabel's tone is improving and she is much more confident in playing than before. :D Dynamics can be played with more effort and needs improvement on breadth support. :)
Jungan's attitude towards band has improved and is becoming more responsible. Wonderful tone! :D But then, sometimes he cannot control his volume and goes crazy. Tends not to watch conductor and goes at his own pace. Needs to focus more too and pay attention to dynamics :)
Deborah's playing and tone has improved alot :D Needs more breadth support and to watch out for dynamics. :)

i'm posting with the very same motive as Kel Lee.

i know it gets boring after we keep doing this "talk" thing, but really, we have to get our message across somehow, and it is by posting it.

we don't keep you back for the "talks" because we know you are already worn out after many hours of practise and also very restless.

you know, its really not very easy to maintain a silver? let alone aim for a better award.

last year, when we went for SYF, the band was of a reasonable size, and we still had to really work together to attain our current award, a SILVER.

it really ain't a walk in the park, especially with more and MORE obstacles coming our way.

here's an insight:

1. our band size is WAY small.
2. not everyone is familiar and can play their parts well.
3. time is not favouring us.
4. SYF is just next year, and definitely NOT as far as you think it is, or it appears to be.
5. we haven't got a confirmed choice piece.
6. we don't have full attendance every time.
7. we still have the secondary 1 CCA showcase to put together, we HAVE to impress in order to recruit people. To impress, a great deal of effort is required.
8. we are in the process of moving, we don't have much practise timeslots.
9. the secondary 4s next year have to concentrate on the "O" levels next year, and devote lesser time to band, our Practical exams begin early next year. Remedials and extra classes will kick in as soon as school commences.

that's all i can think of for now, i'm sure there's more.

seriously, we HAVE to pull ourselves together in order to maintain our silver award, of not a bronze will pop by any time soon, and i'm sure no one wishes to announce a drop in our band's standard next year.

it will not be pleasant, trust me.

look, if no one wants to put in effort, the award we receive will not be of any effort too.

you REALLY have to try and understand.

if a bronze is what you want, please, just tell us.

we don't slog our guts out just for a devastating result once we finish our performance to the judges.

Mr Goh has been, and still is VERY VERY kind and generous to us.

he gives us priority, and sees hope in us, but we are NOT returning his kindness.

the least we can do is to put in effort to play, work out our parts and get it right.

you know, if we don't reciprocate Mr Goh's efforts, he just might divert his attention, perhaps more to East View or Pasir Ris Crest.

they know how to at least show appreciation.

Mr Goh sprained his wrist today, helping us pack stuff, which is NOT his job at all. He still has a bowling competition today, but can't take part in it. just look, LOOK what he's done, it was for US! for everyone!

PLEASE, this has to work out, at least SHOW him that we deserve ALL his every effort and care and time.

Drills. Music. Drills. Music. (KEL LEE)

I'm sure many of you heard what Mr Goh said today. Timotheus, Janis, Sin Pei and me are not very pleased as well. This may not sound nice, but i still have to say it anyway.

Firstly, BAND PRACTICE. As Mr Goh said "There is so many parts that needs to be worked on, and I don't know where to start." What does this say. This means that we need to double our concentration and work harder to sustain our silver or get gold. Mr Goh has been so nice to us already. I think its only fair if we practice hard to show our gratitude to him. I think we are disappointing him when we talk loudly during practice while he is helping another section, or when we don't take sectionals seriously. Don't you think we are letting him down? Shouldn't we put in as much effort as he is putting in to help us? Do you think its easy to conduct a band whose not focusing?

Secondly, ATTENDANCE AND LATE COMING. How do you think we feel when we look at the attendance book and see the numerous amount of zeros? Our band is small, everyone is important. Making the small band smaller is not going to help. PLEASE COME FOR PRACTICE ON TIME. Traffic jams and slow buses are not good reasons for being late. If that is the case, WAKE UP EARLIER! If we can do it, YOU CAN TOO! So, from now on, i expect more 1's to replace 0's in the book. Anyone with lame excuses must watch out.OVERSLEEPING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Thirdly, DRILLS. Imagine jelly doing drills. That is what you all look like. Can you imagine the adjudicators' faces when they see our video? Like Mr Goh said,"Its OUR face on the video, not his." So I suggest that we do our drills more professionally. That way, we can CUT DOWN on drills and GO HOME EARLIER. Have you heard the sound you make when you guys march? During hentak, you all sound like fireworks. During darikiri, you guys sound like you are sweeping the floor. Are you all that tired that you cant lift your feet 1cm of the floor? And your 90-45 is more like 45-10. FOR THE LAST TIME, KIRI IS LEFT, KANAN IS RIGHT! Show us you understand that with 'A sense of urgency'.

Lastly, THE BLACK FACE! Please please stop flashing us the black face. I know that doing drills is not the happiest thing in the world, but please cooperate with us. Also, you must think that "You (top 4) are not the ones doing drills, or downing. You dont know how we feel. All you guys do is talk talk talk talk talk." This is not true. We have done drills before. We know how you all feel. But how do you think we feel when you give us the 'face'. Its not making our jobs any easier. For example, we organize practice for YOUR benefit. You think we do this for fun to torture you. HELLO? WE'RE STAYING BACK TOO?! Plus, you guys stay for ONE day. We stay for more than THREE CONSECUTIVE DAYS. Plus most of the time we drill together WITH you, standing in the hot sun WITH you, not standing under an umbrella with a fan and an ice cream. Do you know how tiring shouting under the sun is as well?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, COOPERATE WITH US. IF YOU THINK WE ARE UNREASONABLE, GIVE US CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK, NOT COMPLAINTS OR BLACK FACES.

If you all have anyway to help you all focus more, contribute to the tagboard and let us know. Anyway, KEL LEE here, dont assume other people wrote it and hate them. HAPPY HOLIDAYS :D

- Fall the band in, take attendance (the file is in the Band room)
- Settle the band down before Mr Goh comes.
- After practice, return the key to teacher.

Fall in will be 15minutes before practice. Practice will be in 2E4 classroom
The day i/cs, make sure the band is disciplined. On certain days, the o levels may be straight after the practice, so make sure that the band clear the place asap and that they don't make any noise.
As for the rest of the band, listen & cooperate with the i/cs! :D

P.S
We are not doing drills because we have nothing better to do. The SYF video that we will be filming next year, will be tough and in fact tougher than the one filmed the year before as you guys have to play as you march.

Because of the 'O' Levels and the move, our practice will be disrupted. Having drill practices will be difficult. And, we don't want to have to be worrying about the video and at the same time, the 2 pieces of songs that we will be playing next year. You guys cannot afford to lose your focus. So please, we appeal for all of you to cooperate with us no matter how taxing or tiring it is. Getting drills right for each individual will be easier for the band on a whole.

The schedule for the holiday practices are not out yet but the schedule is very shaky due to 'O' levels and the move to the new campus.

If there is a need, the relay system will work this way:
Leaders will sms the SLs. SLs will then contact their own section.
SLs, make sure you have ways to contact your section mates.
Whatever way you have to contact, email, msn, sms, call the home, we leave it up to you. So long you get the message across.
Meanwhile, band members can check this blog for updates :D

And remember this, the road to SYF will get very very tiring. All of us will have sore mouths/legs/hands/ulcers/lip pain etc. Bear the pain (but take care of yourselves) for every single one of us is going through it as well. Complaining will not make the situation any better. And for those of you who have trouble reaching certain low/high notes, getting your rhythm correct or getting your dynamics right, practice practice and practice. Don't give up and don't lose faith. Ask your seniors or section mates; that's what they are there for- to help you.
You help yourself by helping others, so Principal Players step up to your job and help the weaker players :) Encourage them and help them :D

Bring home your instrument to practice more often. By this December, you must be able to know the choice piece well enough and play without the score (perhaps not literally, but you get the point).

The band needs everyone to cooperate in order to move forward. All of us have different views on the band and different expectations for the band. No matter what, just do your best. Don't try your best but do your best. By saying you tried your best in getting a certain rhythm correct or whatever but giving up or saying that you will get that part right "some other time" in the end because it is "too" hard, is simply nonsense, cause in actual fact you are ignoring that part. Many of you actually have this mentality. Every practice that you ignore that part, you are actually wasting practice time. Make full use of practice time :)

You are advised to get your individual parts right before hand (take home your instrument or something) so that band practice with Mr Goh can be about putting the parts together and balancing everything else etc. Also, have a pencil on your stand on standby all the time so that you can take down the things that you need to be noted or to put an extra caution to when playing :DDD

Everybody Jiayou and have faith in yourselves and the band.
Our seniors and the other batches have done it and so can us.
Let's work hard, together :D

Zelai's punishment

Here's a little source of entertainment for all of you: Zelai's 20 reasons why he violated the rules and 20 ways he will try to prevent doing it again.

The weather very hot, so I tucked out my shirt.
The shirt is too short.
The pants too loose.
Tuck in very ugly.
Tuck in very uncomfortable.
Used to tucking out shirt.
Often forget.
Shirt comes out when carrying instruments around.
Did not care about shirt when concentrating on practing.
Sometimes will not remember to tuck in back when it came out.
Forget to pull up socks.
Socks too short.
Pull up very ugly.
Socks drops down when walking around.
Very uncomfortable to pull up socks.
Pull up socks very hot.
Sometimes pull up already, but cannot see the 'S' or the 'B'.
Run around will come down, then forget to pull up.
Used to pulling down my socks.
Socks have very big hole, very ugly.

How to prevent:

Endure the heat.
Buy new shirt.
Buy new pants.
Change shirt.
Adjust the shirt to make it comfortable.
Change the habit of tucking out shirt.
Try to remember to tuck in shirt
Don't ignore warning and tuck the shirt back in.
Try to notice that the shirt is tucked out.
Try to remember to tuck in the shirt when it comes out.
Try to remember to pull up socks.
Buy new socks.
Don't care so much about ugly socks.
Pull socks back up again when it drops down.
Try to endure the uncomfortable socks.
Try to endure heat.
Pull the socks higher.
Try to remember to pull up socks when in drops down.
Change the habit of pull socks down.
Change socks.

Around 1/2 of it is being repeated and written in a different way, and we admit that it is quite hard to come up with 20 reasons and ways. But thanks Zelai, for putting in an effort (:
Most of the uniform offenders probably broke the uniform rules with reasons similar to Zelai's.
Learn from Zelais's mistake and don't do them again. If Zelai can admit and correct his mistakes, so can you guys. :D
Zelai did not break the uniform rules today too :)

Just to repeat a few annoucements made/things said today.

- Regarding all punishments (from uniform to instruments), the offender's section do not need to pump with the offender.

- Attendance is COMPULSORY for practices from today onwards. (In fact, it is compulsory since day 1). Mr Goh is going to try out many new songs for SYF so turn up for the practices. And call your juniors/section mates who have been missing practices for lame reasons.

just wana let you guys know:

We are not forcing you guys to go to chalet because of the near examination dates.
But dont worry, we will give you some time to either slack or study during the chalet.
But, you are highly encouraged to go ^^
And, the teachers are not planning this. So if your parents want to find out more, do not ask them to call teachers. Ask leaders for more info (:

- If you really cannot part with it, your soft toys and pillows.
- Junk food to share
- Slippers (Easier to walk about)
- Sleeping bag (If you want to)
- Things for playing (Beach balls, Frisbee etc etc)
- And any other things which you thing is appropriate for things like this :D

HELLO (:

This is for BAND MEMBERS & ALUMNI

Some of you might know that we are having chalet this September :D
This is perhaps the only time we get to play like mad together before chionging for EOYs and of course, SYF 2009 (:

Here is a rough idea of it (some details are not confirmed yet):

Details:
Pasir Ris Chalet
Date: 31 Aug (Sun) - 2 Sept (Tues)
Yeah, 3Days 2Nights.

On the first night, 31st Aug - SUNDAY, there will be a BBQ party.
ALL alumni (esp the alumni who played for moments 2008) are invited to join us :DD
It is just the band's little way of saying: THANK YOU! :D
Alumni who didn't play are also invited to join us because you are dearly missed
:D
You can stay for the night if you want to too ;D
(Help us spread the word among the alumni please & thank you :D)

Amount everyone has to pay (except Alumni): $20
We are collecting $20 from everyone just in case we exceed the budget and need more money for food.
P.s Bring $20 this Friday, 22nd Aug.
Latest next monday, 25th Aug

Don't worry, if there is alot of money left over, we will divide and return to you guys.
But if there is like $10 and below or something left over, we will probably spend it on FOOD :)

From the numbers counted during today's practice almost everyone is staying over,
So we'll be booking 2 rooms (single storey) which costs like $448.
Yeah.
:)

Thanks to MR GOH, who will be sponsoring for ALL the cost for the food for the BBQ, we can spend more money on junk food and drinks :D

ALL members are encouraged to stay over for at least 1 night.

We know EOYs are coming and you guys are freaking out and want to mug like mad.
But you can bring your notes over to study with friends, bandmates and seniors.

Take it as a break from your studies and start to chiong after the two days :D

Be positive about this whole thing and cause it will be GREAT (:
